You’ve heard the commercials…you know, the ones that promise to save you a certain amount of money in “x” amount of time. They certainly can be enticing. But when you’re talking insurance, most of the time less is less.

Insurance agencies that deal exclusively with one company are, understandably, limited in the choices they can offer their customers. Independent insurance agencies, on the other hand, have access to a wide variety of companies in the insurance marketplace. What does this mean for you, the consumer? It means you will have more choices in the search for the coverage you need at a price that your budget will thank you for.

Do you have a home or vehicle that is financed? Our personal lines agents can find just the right policy to meet your budget as well as your lending institution’s requirements. Do you need business insurance or a contractor’s bond? Let our experienced, knowledgeable commercial lines brokers handle it.

At Gress Kinney Parrish Insurance Center, our agents and customer service representatives (CSRs) will do the work for you, searching the marketplace to find you the policy to safeguard what’s important to you, whether it’s your home, your auto, or your business. For a free, no-obligation quote, call (509) 575-0300, or stop by our office at 3 N 7th Ave in Yakima, WA during our regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.).

Go independent, and go local. Choose Gress Kinney Parrish Insurance Center—serving the insurance needs of Yakima Valley families since 1964.

Resources for info on changes in flood hazard mapping

Lately, our office has been swamped with calls related to the recent changes in flood hazard mapping in Yakima County, no doubt in response to receiving a Letter of Map Changes (LOMCs) from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency, a service of the US Department of Homeland Security). An LOMC is a letter that represents an official revision or amendment to an effective Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).

If you have received one of these letters informing you that your property is now considered to be in a flood hazard zone and there is an outstanding mortgage on your property, your lender most likely will require you to obtain flood insurance if you don’t already have it. (Flood coverage is typically not included on a standard homeowners policy.) Even if this is not the case, chances are you have lots of questions.

If you’re the type who likes to do your own research, here’s a list of helpful links to get you started.

Yakima County, Washington State, and federal flood hazard-related resources

If you find yourself still in a quandary, please call (509) 575-0300 or stop by our office at 3 N 7th Ave, Yakima, WA 98902.

How flood insurance works

stucco-house-compressed

Did you know that flood damage typically isn’t covered on a homeowners or renters basic policy? Did you also know that flood coverage is available to homeowners, renters, and business owners only if their community participates in the NFIP through the National Flood Insurance Program?

If you’re thinking of adding a flood policy to your basic coverage, don’t expect immediate gratification. The first step is to obtain an elevation certificate; these must be completed by a land surveyor, engineer, or architect who is authorized by law to certify elevation information. If your property is in Yakima County, you can find elevation certificate requirements at the County Assessor’s website; visit http://www.yakimacounty.us/documentcenter/view/5942

Flood insurance premiums are calculated based on a number of factors. Your agent will ask you the year of construction, the number of floors, and other pertinent questions. After a policy is bound, there is a 30-day waiting period before coverage kicks in.

For more information, call or come in and talk to one of our agents. You can also learn more at FloodSmart.gov
