Group health insurance refers to coverage through an employer or other entity that covers all individuals in the group. Group health plans are guaranteed issue (see below), meaning that the insurance company must cover all applicants whose employment qualifies them for coverage; insurance companies are restricted from charging more for premiums for individuals with a pre-existing condition (see below).

In addition to being responsible for a significant portion of the health care expenses, employer-sponsored plans typically are able to include a range of plan options from HMO and PPO to additional coverage such as dental, life, and short- and long-term disability.

*Guaranteed issue refers to health insurance coverage that is guaranteed to be issued to applicants regardless of their health status, age, or income – and guarantees that the policy will be renewed as long as the policy holder continues to pay the policy premium.

*A pre-existing condition is a medical condition that is excluded from coverage by an insurance company because the condition was believed to exist prior to the individual obtaining a policy from that particular insurance company.
